About Me

Hello and welcome to my art education website! My name is Mrs. L. Capobianco and I'm very enthusiastic about teaching art!

I was born in Boston, Mass. and grew up on the south shore of Long Island. I graduated from Suffolk County Community College with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, later transferring to Long Island University C.W. Post Campus to earn my BFA in Art Education, graduating with the honors of "Summa Cum Laude" and a 3.9 GPA.

I completed my MS Visual Art Education degree at SUNY New Paltz and graduated in May 2015 and I worked as a volunteer art educator through the organization Artistic Noise, which brings art programs to incarcerated youth using restorative justice.

I have full time experience teaching in the following areas at North Babylon High School:

Architecture 1,2,3

Design and Drawing for Production

Creative Crafts 1 and 2

3D Design/Sculpture

Art Club

I have also had the pleasure of working as a high school art leave replacement teacher in the following areas:

AP Studio Art

Drawing/Painting 1 and 2

Studio Art

Media Arts (photoshop and Illustrator)

Fashion Design

While pursuing my Masters degree I worked as a teaching assistant for level one high school Spanish classes. I've also worked as a substitute teacher at Plainedge Union Free School District for the past few years, gaining relevant experience teaching a variety of grades, subjects and abilities. In addition  Some of my accomplishments include working part time at the Student Art Gallery at Long Island University, travelling abroad on an art study tour titled "The Art of Paris, Florence and Rome", successfully completing student teaching under the guidance of supervisor Harry Posnanski, as well as spending a semester teaching within the Nassau County Museum of Art under the guidance of Dr. Donna Tuman. My experiences have thoroughly prepared me to be a confident, well organized art teacher, always striving to inspire a lifetime love of learning and creativity in the classroom by engaging students of various abilities while educating the whole child. My strengths include highly developed classroom management skills, integrating curriculum and incorporating creative problem solving skills within my lessons. I'm very passionate about art education and determined to fulfill my dream as being an art teacher.

Over the past two summers my personal artwork has been featured as part of a group exhibition within the Fine Arts Rotunda at SUNY New Paltz. My work consisted of digital photography, photomontage, drawings, paintings and found artifacts that depict the ethereal environment of the now abandoned grounds of Shohola Glen Amusement Park, buried deep within the woods. This mysterious place was abandoned in the early 1900s and left to ruins. Over the past century, the elements have taken there toll and many of the crumbling structures are gone, however, a careful look may reveal hidden remnants of the past. Among these structures was a carousel that had been swept away into the Delaware River by Hurricane Diane in 1955. My photography series explores the Glen through the eyes of a fictional character, creating a fictional narrative based loosely upon the history that I had extensively researched. My other works of art explore a psychological component associated with the space and the people that inhabited it. Through taking artistic risks I was able to create a successful narrative within my works of art. My show was well received by both students and faculty, as well as guests touring the college.

Ever since I was young I've always enjoyed various creative pursuits, whether it be drawing and painting, photography, writing and illustrating short stories, digital imaging and photoshop, cake decorating, etc. This creative passion has led me to the conclusion that I am meant to be an art educator and pass on all that I have learned to inspire the next generation of students! As I continue my journey as an art educator I continue to educate myself because I firmly believe in the concept of being a lifelong learner. I'm committed to remain current and knowledgable in regards to the latest research relating to art education and pedagogy, curricular integration, educating the whole child, the common core in regards to art education, contemporary art and current events, as well as information pertaining to art historical content.
